Why can’t my Xbox Series X read discs? tip and tricks

Why can’t my Xbox Series X read discs?

Your Xbox Series X not reading discs can cause many issues as that is the main way a lot of people play their games; it can also be caused by many different things. Here’s some things you can try to see if you can get your Xbox Series X reading discs again.

Some of my discs play, others don’t:

Clean the disc with a soft, clean, and slightly damp cloth, hold the disc by the as to not touch to reflective side of the disc that is read by the console. Make sure to look for any scratches or damage to the disc as scratches and cracks can permanently break discs.
If the disc is not damaged and is clean, try the disc on a different Xbox Console if the disc works on that console move on to the next option. If the disc did not work, then the disc itself is most likely broken and you should get a replacement.

None of my discs are recognised when I insert them:

Open the guide by pressing the Xbox button on your controller, select “Profile & System” then “Settings” then “General” and open “Power Mode & Start-up”. Select “Power mode” and choose “Energy-saving”.

Hard power cycle the Xbox by holding down the Xbox button on the console itself for 10 seconds.

Once the console has completely powered down, turn it back on again and insert a disc into the console. Wait a few seconds to see if it can now read it. If so, you can now return to “Power Mode & Start-up” and revert the “Power mode” choice to “Instant-on”

If this does not work and you have tested the disc on another Xbox console and/or other discs also do not work on your console you will have to get your Xbox’s disc drive replaced, your best bet at first is to contact Microsoft and see if you are covered by a warren, and if not how much it will cost to get it repaired.

If Microsoft can’t or refuse to repair your Xbox, find a console repair shop such as ourselves that are willing to replace the drive for you.

There is a disc stuck in my Xbox Series X:

First thing to try is to eject the disc through the Xbox software. Hold down the Xbox button on your controller until the power centre opens, select restart console, and then restart. After it restarts press the eject button next to the disc slot. If this doesn’t work, try ejecting the disc using your controller, press the Xbox button to open the guide. Select “Home” and highlight the game that is currently inserted and press X on your controller to eject the disc. If this doesn’t work, you may have to manually eject the disc.

To manually eject the disc from your console you will first need to unplug the console from mains power as well as unplug and cables that are connected to the console. Then, uncoil a large paper clip that is able to reach about 2 inches. Insert the paper clip into the eject hole on the console, this can be found on the button side of the console at the edge of the round stand near the disc drive.
